Education and resources about perinatal mental health

What peer support means to me – Gill Skene, peer supporter

by Clare Thompson • 20 November 2020

Latnem is a maternal mental health peer support group based in Inverurie. Founded in January 2020 we have recently seen a massive increase in demand for services.

We support mums with a wide range of mental health issues from antenatal depression and anxiety through to post natal conditions, PTSD and birth trauma. If you are a mum who is struggling with your mental health or in need of support we want to hear from you.

As well as providing a safe socially distanced meeting weekly we also meet over zoom every Friday which allows us to support women from all over Aberdeenshire.

Here’s what peer support means to Gill, who supports mums with LATNEM…

Everything… At one point it was the only thing that stood between me jumping in the car and never coming back, even from ending things in a more permanent way. Knowing that people had been there, survived and recovered was the only thing that kept me going. They were the candle in the dark and I’m paying that gift forward now. I’m lighting the way for others.
